Strategies: MMM (Moblin Maze Mongers)

Mazes are an instanced area that is accessed from the Chocobo Stables in Lower Jeuno. You can order a maze once per JP midnight, but you can join as many maze parties as you would like. Mazes are most commonly used for EXP parties using Voucher 01, but you can do other things in them such as fight NMs, get augmented belts, or get some nice fishing items.

Other than resonating runes on specific elements, rune placement doesn't matter. Pictured rune layouts are just one possible way, showing the most efficient layout possible to allow for additional or alternate runes.

Tabulas

Tabulas
# Tiles Elements Obtain
M01 23 None Free from Goldagrik
M02 22 Wind, Lightning, Fire, Light 100 Marbles
M03 22 Earth, Water, Ice, Dark 100 Marbles

The different Tabulas determine which elements you can resonate runes with and how many free spaces there are to place them. Mazes that begin with the letter M are master Tabulas that allow the maze holder to customize it with whatever Vouchers and Runes they own. Mazes you purchase from Duplidoc begin with the letter R and cannot be customized.

Tabulas are the only physical items you will need to hold for mazes. You can carry up to 6 tabulas (M01, M02, M03, R01, R02, R03). If you want a new copied maze from Duplidoc, you must throw away your existing copy of the corresponding tabula (R01, R02, R03).

C. C. Points (Cave Conservation Points)

Starting 32 hours after you order your last maze, you will accumulate C. C. points every 8 hours, capping at 6 C. C. points. The points will reset to 0 once you order a maze. Having 1 or more C. C. points will spawn a Lockbox after the Hordebox is opened that only the maze owner can open and the contents go directly to their inventory. The Lockbox marble reward will be floor(.5 * [C. C. Points] * [Hordebox contents]), the EXP reward uses a similar formula with only a fraction of the Hordebox EXPs. The Lockbox can contain additional runes and/or item rewards specific to that voucher.

As of Jun 21, 2010, you can only order a maze once every 24 hours. Previously, maze reentry reset at JP midnight. The table below represents when you would get your next C. C. point if you ordered your maze at noon.

Getting Started

If you're just starting out with mazes, you probably only have Tabula 01, Voucher 01, the two starter runes, and whatever random runes you happened to be lucky enough to get from EXP mazes. Maybe you have 100 or so marbles saved up. Here's a list of the most important runes for just about any maze you could want to make:

Getting more marbles is your first priority: you need marbles to get runes, no matter what type of maze you are interested in. If Duplidoc doesn't have any mazes suitable for farming marbles, get runes that will build your marble farming maze first.

Marble Farming

There are two commonly recommended vouchers for farming marbles: 05 and 06. Even though Voucher 04 has the second highest base marble reward, most Maze Scholars recommend not bothering due to the difficulty of the maze.

Voucher 06 is a challenging maze that will probably take a few runs before you start winning without dying, but it gives the most marbles and is easily soloable. There should be a few decent mazes on Duplidoc to get you started. Look for one with 016 Stillness (resonating) and 113 Shortcut. Runes 002, 009, 010, and 011 significantly increase the marble reward but adds more enemies to dodge (some are easier than others, you can decide for yourself after a few runs). Once you get enough runes to make your own version, you can add 094 to get access to rare runes like 108.

Voucher 05 is the next best maze for marbles and it gives an augmented belt (one belt per Hordebox, an additional belt in the Lockbox if they have C. C. points). If you want to maximize the marbles you get from this maze, you will likely need to build your own using runes 17, 18, and 100-104. You can probably convince friends to do extra runs with you in hopes of getting good augments (currently the only way to get Snapshot or Fast Cast on a belt!). You can split up to complete the quest objectives, or you can do this solo. This voucher cannot take 094.

Rune Farming

In addition to runes you can purchase from Chatnachoq, some runes can only be acquired from the Hordebox (or Lockbox). Up to two runes can drop per maze, plus one voucher specific one (V05's 114-116, V08's 85 and 117). The Lockbox can also contain a rune.

Ordinary runes like Supreme Might (017), Peon (020), magic runes (041-046), and a few other assorted runes can come from any maze not using Lost and Found. Voucher specific runes can drop from mazes using the corresponding voucher, with or without Lost and Found (085 and 117 confirmed to drop on L+F maze).

Using rune 094 changes the Hordebox to only drop the Lost and Found runes: job runes (051-056), synthesis runes (086-093 and 097), and the coveted Conditioning Contract (108). Lost and Found is always used on Vouchers 07 and 08, so volunteering to help out on those mazes can be a good way to get these runes.

Rune Spreadsheet

Download the Spreadsheet. This will let you keep track of the runes you have (has columns setup for up to 6 characters). Simply put a 1 if you have it, leave it blank if you don't. Adds up the value of the marbles you've spent, and how much it will cost to buy everything you are missing. Light grey rows come from the Hordebox, light yellow rows come from Hordebox+094.
